Helping to Build and Sustain Flourishing Communities

The Third Sector Development Unit works proactively with vulnerable people, targeted communities and Third Sector organisations, enabling them to have a voice, providing advice and information and supporting their development. To achieve this, the Unit also provides strategic direction and support to Cheshire County Council services and external partnerships and agencies.

Our work contributes to the Council’s core purpose by:

  • improving health and emotional wellbeing
  • improving quality of life
  • enabling people to make a positive contribution
  • providing increased choice and control
  • ensuring freedom from discrimination
  • assisting economic wellbeing
  • respecting individuals

What do we mean by Third Sector?

The Government’s Office of the Third Sector defines the third sector as:

“Non-governmental organisations which are value-driven and principally re-invest their surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives. It includes voluntary and community organisations, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives and mutual's”.

Speaking on 26 July 2007 the Prime Minister set out a 10-year vision for how government can support a thriving third sector.
